5 Common Household Items To Get Rid Of Right Away

Did you know that May is National Clean Air month? This may not come as a surprise knowing that springtime allergies tend to be at their peak during the month of May. With that said, there are dozens of household items you might use on a daily basis that actually pollute the air inside your home. See below to find out what you should get rid of right away to avoid dealing with the consequences:

Fresh Air

  1. Aerosol Sprays: check the ingredient lists on your bathroom sprays, air fresheners and hairsprays. If they contain aerosols, it’s best to get rid of them. Chances are, they emit VOCs which are known to be very dangerous.

  2. Paint, Paint Thinners and Stains: similar to aerosol sprays, lots of paints, paint thinners are stains contain VOCs. If you’re in the market for any of the above, be sure to look for non-toxic versions.

  3. Candles: especially those made from paraffin wax. Burning paraffin wax can give off carcinogens like benzene and toluene, so look for soy-based candles instead.

  4. Chlorine Bleach: not only can it irritate your eyes and your nose, chlorine bleach is made from some of the same ingredients used in chemical warfare. You don’t want to be releasing that stuff into your own home, right?

  5. Dryer Sheets: believe it or not, the waxy substance you feel on your dryer sheets has been linked to asthma. Additionally, some of the products used to create that pleasant scent aren’t so “pleasant.” They have been known to produce carcinogens and other toxins although there’s no way of knowing for sure due to trade secrets.
