Quite frankly, not every air conditioner problem requires the knowledge and expertise of a professional HVAC technician. In fact, there are a number of A/C issues that can be fixed by most homeowners in a matter of minutes. If your A/C won’t turn on, or it it’s not blowing cool air, see below – you just might be able to take care of it without picking up the phone.
My A/C Won’t Turn On
Ever wake up to a hot house and wonder why your air conditioning system hasn’t kicked on? First, check the thermostat. Make sure the unit has power and that the batteries haven’t worn out. Then check the settings – make sure it’s set to “cool” and that the temperature is set below your home’s current temperature.
If that doesn’t solve the problem, head over to the air filter. Sometimes when an air filter is clogged, it will prevent the system from firing up. Why? Clogged filters limit airflow and can cause the system to overheat. If your filter is covered in dust, dirt or debris clean it off or replace it right away.
My A/C Isn’t Blowing Cool Air
This could also be a result of a dirty filter. Restricted airflow means not enough cool air will travel through your ducts which can leave you with a warm house.
It’s also vital to check your ducts for leaks. Cracks, gaps or holes can allow cool air to leak out and never make it to the areas of your house where you need it most. You may be able to seal minor leaks on your own, but remember, duct tape is NOT the answer!
