Heat Pump Troubleshooting

Sometimes heat pumps fail to heat and cool properly, causing discomfort for you and your family. Diagnosing and repairing your heat pump as soon as possible is important, especially during the frigid winter months. Keep reading for tips on heat pump troubleshooting from Rusk Heating & Cooling:

If your heat pump doesn't turn on, check the following:
  • Is the thermostat set to the proper temperature?
  • Is the heat pump receiving power?
  • Is the power switch turned on?
  • Have the circuit breakers and fuses blown?

If your heat pump isn't heating or cooling properly, here's what to look for:
  • Are the room-heating registers open?
  • Does your filter need to be changed?
  • Do you need to clean the coils?
If your heat pump's blower isn't functioning, do the following:
  • Inspect your thermostat and make sure the "fan" switch is turned on.
  • Check to see if the belt is broken.
    • If it is, turn off the power and get the serial number off your heat pump blower's belt -- this number is needed for purchasing a replacement.
