How Does Air Conditioning Work?

How Does Air Conditioning Work?

Let's start with the basics. According to Live Science, "The basic concept is that a chemical called a refrigerant loops from inside the home to outside and back again, absorbing and casting out heat in the process." The refrigerant then cools down and re-enters the home, beginning the cycle over again.

The four major components of an air conditioner are:
  1. Evaporator
  2. Compressor
  3. Condenser
  4. Expansion device
Fans within an air conditioning unit blow warm air over the coil, at which point the refrigerant absorbs the heat. This cools the air down, while turning the refrigerant into a gas.
The gaseous refrigerant then moves into the compressor, where it's further compressed and heated up. That's when the refrigerant makes its way to the condenser, where it's condensed back into a liquid as heat dissipates. Finally, the refrigerant will flow into the evaporator to be turned back into a low-pressure gas.
