Furnace Warning Signs & Red Flags

Old age

Furnaces that are more than 15 years old may need to be replaced. To figure out just how old your unit is, refer to the owner’s manual or call up the manufacturer and be ready to provide the model number.

Frequent repairs

Have you poured too much money into your keeping your furnace alive? If so, it may be close to breaking down completely.

Increased utility costs

Don’t blame higher-than-usual gas and electric bills on rising prices alone. A poorly maintained furnace can become less efficient over time, driving up operating costs.

Yellow burner flame

The flame within your gas-burning furnace should be blue, not yellow. Discoloration could indicate a presence of carbon monoxide — a poisonous and potentially lethal gas.
