7 Vital Space Heater Safety Tips

7 Vital Space Heater Safety Tips | Heating Company Northern Kentucky You rely on your home's heating system just about all winter long, but sometimes it just isn't enough to keep you and your family comfortable. While we don't recommend using portable space heaters as they're a leading cause of home fires in the United States, we do understand that some homeowners simply don't have many other options. So, if you must use one to keep your home cozy this season, we strongly encourage you to follow these safety precautions:
  1. Look for the label that shows your heater is recognized and has been tested by a legitimate laboratory.
  2. Read all manufacturer's instructions, warning labels and notices before using the heater.
  3. Check for cracked or broken plugs, loose connections or damaged wires before plugging it in.
  4. Never leave a space heater unattended. Be sure to turn them off when you leave the room, especially when you head to sleep for the night.
  5. Portable heaters should only be used as a supplement and should not be used to heat bedding, cook food, dry clothing or thaw frozen pipes. Improper use can lead to fires.
  6. Space heaters must be kept at least 3 feet away from any and all flammable objects. This includes papers, carpets, clothing, blinds, bedding, etc.
  7. Plug the heater directly into a wall outlet. Do not use extension cords or power strips as a source of electricity.
Keep in mind that the reason you may need a portable heater is because your furnace or boiler is not operating correctly. If this is the case, give the heating experts at Rusk Heating & Cooling a call right away and we'll get your system back up and running as quickly as possible.
