Heat Pumps & Energy Efficiency

Did you know that ENERGY STAR-labeled heat pumps use approximately 5 percent less energy than traditional heating and cooling equipment? This energy efficient option helps keep your home comfortable while also saving energy. The result? Lower utility bills, less carbon pollution and reduced greenhouse gases.

How do heat pumps work? They utilize the difference between the temperature of the air outside and the temperature inside your home to cool and heat as needed. That's why they generally have low seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) and heating season performance factor (HSPF) ratings.

Heat pumps work best in moderate climates. Here, the U.S. Department of Energy explains:
The most common type of heat pump is the air-source heat pump, which transfers heat between your house and the outside air. If you heat with electricity, a heat pump can trim the amount of electricity you use for heating by as much as 30% to 40%.
Geothermal heat pumps are also an option. This type of system can achieve high efficiencies by transferring heat between the ground or nearby body of water and your home. Ground-source and water-source heat pumps can be used in more extreme climates, and customers are generally very pleased with the results.
