Fall Furnace Maintenance: What You're Not Doing, But Should Be

Fall Furnace Maintenance | Cincinnati Heating Company | Rusk Heating & Cooling The days are still warm for this time of year, but the nights are getting cooler and cooler. And if you haven't turned your home's heating system on yet, we're going to bet that you'll be doing so in the next couple of weeks. What does this mean? It means it's time to clean and inspect your equipment to prevent it from wearing itself out too quickly and to make sure it'll keep working efficiently all winter long. Here's what you need to do before it's too late:
  1. Before you start working on any part of your heating system, be sure to turn the system off. Look for the red power switchplate at the top of your cellar stairs or near the burner itself.
  2. Inspect the flue pipe. This is a MUST as holes in the exhaust flue can leak carbon monoxide into the air. Small holes can be patched with foil tape, but larger holes, cracks or gaps means that the flue must be replaced right away.
  3. Remove floor registers and vacuum out the ducts. Registers are magnets for dust, dirt, pet hair and small toys - all of which can lead a decrease in efficiency.
  4. If you have an oil-powered system, you'll want to replace the oil filter. The oil filter prevents small impurities from clogging the burner nozzle so it's important to make sure it's clean at the beginning of each heating season.
