What Does an HVAC Air Filter Do?

Most homeowners usually think of heating and cooling systems as just that; equipment that can make your home warmer or cooler, depending on the season. However, your HVAC system is also responsible for keeping your home’s indoor air quality high. They do this through air filters, which can keep contaminants like dirt, dust, mold spores, pet dander, and pollen out of your air supply. Air flows into your furnace, through the filter, and then the blower motor pushes the conditioned air through your air ducts.

As time goes on and your HVAC system is used more frequently, filters will become clogged with all of the contaminants they’ve pulled from your air supply. To keep performance and indoor air quality high, your HVAC system’s air filters will need to be replaced regularly.

What Happens if the Air Filter is Backwards?

Many homeowners choose to replace their air filters on their own. While this is certainly possible, it opens the door for mistakes, such as installing the furnace filter backwards. Installing an air filter backward can damage your furnace or HVAC system, as the airflow will be decreased dramatically. A backwards filter prevents air from flowing into the furnace, which prevents air from flowing out of the furnace.

When this happens, your system will need to stay on for longer periods in order to reach the set temperature. The more that your system runs, the more stress your system will endure. Additionally, you’ll notice higher utility bills, as your system will be using more energy.

To remedy the issue, simply take the air filter out, turn it to the opposite side, and reinstall it. HVAC filters have arrows printed on the filter that let you know the correct direction to install the filter. The arrow should always face the same direction as the airflow of the system

How Often Should You Replace Your System’s Air Filter?

How often you replace your air filters for your HVAC system can vary depending on usage. However, as a general rule of thumb, your HVAC system’s air filter should be replaced every 2-3 months. This will ensure that your filters aren’t getting too clogged, helping performance remain strong.

In months when your HVAC equipment is running more frequently due to the outdoor temperatures, you might consider replacing the AC or furnace filter soon than you otherwise would.
