While furnaces and central air conditioning systems are popular choices amongst homes in the Greater Cincinnati area and beyond, ductless mini-splits provide homeowners with plenty of benefits.

In the latest blog post from Rusk Heating and Cooling, we’ll discuss what ductless mini-splits are, if they provide both heating and cooling, and the benefits of these systems. Be sure to contact us today to learn more or to schedule an appointment.

What Is a Ductless Mini-Split?

Whether you’re just looking to add heating or AC to a single room that doesn’t have any ductwork, or you want to install several units throughout your entire home, ductless mini-splits are a great option. Traditional heating and cooling systems use ductwork that allows heated and cooled air to reach all areas of the home. Ductless mini-splits, as the name suggests, do not require any ductwork.

Instead of using ductwork and ventilation, they utilize an outdoor unit, refrigeration lines, and a wall-mounted indoor unit.

Can Ductless Mini-Splits Be Used for Both Heating and Cooling?

Ductless mini-split heat pumps are growing in popularity because of their ability to provide both heating and cooling. These units are incredibly efficient because, rather than creating heat, they simply move heat from one place to another. This allows the system to use significantly less energy than furnaces and other types of heating systems.

These systems provide AC by using refrigerant to cool the evaporator coils. The mini-split’s air handler will then draw warm air from inside the home, removing it from the home. The warm air then passes over the coils and is redistributed to the home in order to provide cool temperatures. The process is repeated as many times as needed during a cycle to keep the room at your desired temperature.

When paired with a heat pump to provide heating, the process is simply reversed. Even on cold days, the outdoor air contains heat energy. A ductless mini-split heat pump can collect heat energy from outside and bring it back indoors, helping to heat up your home.

Advantages of Installing Ductless Mini-Split Systems

Heating and Cooling From a Single System

Typically, in order to experience year-round comfort, you’ll need both a central AC system and a heating system, such as a furnace or boiler. As mentioned earlier, ductless mini-split heat pumps can provide both heating and cooling, eliminating the need to install two separate systems.

Complete Temperature Control

Tired of having fights at the thermostat over how hot or cold the home should be? Ductless mini-splits are individually installed in separate rooms throughout the home. This means that each system can be set to a different temperature, allowing the occupants of each room to be as warm or cool as they please.

Greater Energy Efficiency

Ductless mini-splits do not require significant energy usage. As we discussed earlier, they essentially keep your home comfortable by moving heat from one place to another. This keeps energy bills low, while still keeping your home safe and comfortable.

Compact Size

A ductless mini-split doesn’t take up much space. They’re smaller units that are mounted on walls within the home. Best yet, they’re not loud while operating, helping to keep distractions to a minimum.

Minimal Maintenance

Typically, ductless mini-splits only require an annual maintenance appointment. Aside from that, be sure to change the system’s filters about once per month and make sure that the unit’s vents remain clean.
